Precious Plastic: The abundance of plastic waste can be impacted locally in innovative ways! Big Picture students who select this Service Learning Term project will build two components of a plastic recycling system to allow us to make new products from bottles that would have ended up in the recycling bin, on their way to who-knows-where! We will learn welding, soldering, electronics and machining as we create a shredder and a injection-molding system to recycle plastic and make a real impact on our waste stream!

Guiding Questions:

  • How much plastic can we remove from the waste stream via local recycling?

  • What can we make from plastic that could be durable and keep plastic out of the dump?

  • Where does our waste go when we throw it away?

  • What is plastic made from and how does it impact humans and the environment?
